SportsCage host Barney Shynkaruk shares his top five moments from Saskatchewan sports in 2025.
1: Riders run to 112th Grey Cup
Five, just five championships is hard to believe, but at least it's not four anymore.
As much excitement as there was around the actual game in Winnipeg on that Sunday, the moment of the whole run for me was the last drive of the West Final. The methodical march by Trevor Harris and crew with 1:04 left was the excitement the new Mosaic stadium had been deprived of.
I'm really happy for a die-hard fans who got the chance to be part of another championship and saw it done on enemy turf.
2: Regina Pat Canadians win Telus Cup.
It was a special run for Regina's U18 AAA team in 2025. The Pat C's won their fifth Telus Cup, defeating the Chevaliers de Lévis 3-2 in overtime on April 27. Maddox Schultz scored the winner 28 seconds into the extra frame in Chilliwack, B.C. The win completed the sweep of the provincial championship, the regional championship and the national.
Who will ever forget the blond hair on the boys during this run? Yama hama…
3: Blue Jays run to World Series Game 7
As I have stated on the air a number of times, I am not a huge baseball or Blue Jays follower, but the run through the MLB playoffs and David vs. Goliath match-up with Los Angeles in the World Series made for fantastic entertainment.
I will forever remember Halloween night and how trick or treating was done early to avoid missing Game 6. The moment that will always be engraved in my memory is how a baseball got stuck in the bottom padding of a wall in the bottom of the ninth inning.
We all know what happened in Game 7, but the run and theatre that came along with it was one of my favourites of 2025.
4 – Braxton Whitehead commits to play NCAA hockey
Former Regina Pats forward Braxton Whitehead received a verbal commitment for the 2025-2026 season from Arizona State University's Division I program despite NCAA eligibility rules at the time that prevented any player who had appeared in a major junior hockey game from playing college hockey.
It was the first NCAA commitment for a Canadian Hockey League player after a proposed class action suit was filed against the NCAA and 10 universities in August 2024, claiming that the eligibility rules violated antitrust laws.
Whitehead's announcement gained attention and started a rush of CHL players signing commitments with NCAA teams.
5: Fort Knox wins first-ever PJHL title
It was a run that long-time supporters of the team and local residents of Fort Qu'Appelle won't forget anytime soon, Fort Knox won their first-ever championship in franchise history by defeating the Saskatoon Westleys four games to two in the league final series. It was fun for the SportsCage team covering this run and seeing a first come to a passionate hockey area.
Here's to another great year of Saskatchewan sports in 2026!
