SASKATOON — A major change to roadside enforcement is coming to Saskatoon with the new year, meaning any driver pulled over by police could be asked to take a breath test regardless whether the officer suspects they’ve been drinking.
Starting Jan. 1, 2026, the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) will implement Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS).
Under MAS, officers with the SPS Traffic Unit and Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan conducting traffic stops will have the authority to demand a roadside breath sample from any driver during a lawful traffic stop, from speeding infractions to routine checks.
The authority for MAS has existed since 2018 following changes to the Criminal Code for impaired driving, and has been implemented by other police services across the province. This local implementation reflects a commitment to consistent, province-wide road safety practices.
If stopped, drivers can expect to be prepared to provide a roadside breath sample and drivers are expected to comply with the lawful demand. SPS says the screening process is designed to be brief.
