SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Police Service will implement a Mandatory Alcohol Screening starting Jan. 1, to further improve road safety and reduce impaired driving within the city.
Officers of SPS’s Traffic Unit, along with their counterparts at the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan, will conduct traffic stops as part of MAS.
These traffic stops may lawfully require drivers to provide a roadside breath sample into an approved screening device, without requiring suspicion of impairment. The test will also be done randomly.
MAS has existed since 2018 following changes to the Criminal Code for impaired driving, and has been implemented by other police services across the province.
Drivers, if stopped, are expected to comply with the law and must be prepared to undergo the breath test, with the screening process designed to be brief.
SPS’s local implementation of MAS reflects its commitment to consistently following province-wide road safety practices.
