Canadian wheat and durum exports are maintaining an above average pace to close out 2025, according to the last Wheat Market Outlook of 2025, covering the week of December 22.
Wheat exports through week 20 of the 2025-26 marketing year are at 8.82 million metric tonnes (mmt), over 1 million tonnes ahead of last year's total of 7.81 mmt.
Durum exports sit at 1.79 mmt, just below last year's pace but ahead of the five year average of 1.56 mmt.
Exceed Grain Marketing, which compiles the weekly reports, said "durum export pace expectations were initially, and are expected to remain, less than last year. IGC is expecting to see 5.5 mmt of crop to leave the nation this year vs. 5.9 mmt as the figure last year. Canadian wheat and durum export paces are exceeding initial expectations for movement, but it is early in the marketing year and continued strong pace needs to be seen."
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) released estimates of the Canadian wheat supply and dispositions on December 17. AAFC used Statistics Canada’s December Final Production Report as a baseline for its estimates.
AAFC had 2025-26 total wheat carryout at 7.5 mmt, higher than last year's 4.1 mmt. AAFC acknowledged the above average export pace but "cautions more wheat will be available from Argentina and Australian origins this year."
The report also looked at wheat quality as of November 28, using data from the Canadian Grain Commission.
For Canadian Western Red Spring Wheat (CWRS), it contained an average protein content of 13.8 per cent, lower than last year's 14.1 per cent. About 91.3 per cent of this year's spring wheat graded number one or number two compared to last year’s 94 per cent.
For Durum, it had an average protein content of 14.6 per cent, lower than last year's 15.3 per cent. 44.9 per cent of durum was in the number one or two categories, versus last year’s 73 per cent. There was more durum in the number three category compared to last year.
