BIG ISLAND LAKE – As RCMP continue their investigation into a fatal shooting on Big Island Lake Cree Nation that left one person dead and three others injured, reports of shots fired Friday night raise the question of whether or not they are related.
On Jan. 2, at approximately 10:50 p.m., Pierceland RCMP received multiple reports of the sound of a firearm being discharged. Officers responded and searched the area, but no injured persons were located, states a release issued Jan. 3.
Pierceland RCMP are investigating with the assistance of Saskatchewan RCMP’s North Battlefords Provincial General Investigation Section. Part of the investigation will be determining if there is any connection to the Dec. 30, 2025, shooting on Big Island Lake Cree Nation, which remains under active investigation by Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crime investigators.
RCMP say residents of Big Island Lake Cree Nation will notice a continued increased police presence as these investigations continue. If an imminent risk to public safety is identified, say police, they will notify the public.
Saskatchewan RCMP urges anyone with information about either investigation to contact police immediately by dialling 310-RCMP. Information can also be submitted anonymously by contacting Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
The Dec. 30 incident triggered a dangerous persons alert for the area, which was in effect from about 8:23 a.m. to 4:49 p.m.
The RCMP haven’t released the name of the deceased, but said it was a 31-year-old man and his family has been notified.
