MELFORT — A 37-year-old man charged with second-degree murder in the death of an infant remains in custody following his first scheduled appearance in Melfort Provincial Court.
The accused didn’t appear in person. A legal aid lawyer appeared on his behalf and requested an adjournment. According to court documents, he is seeking to retain private counsel.
Judge Lloyd W. Stang adjourned the matter to Jan. 19, when he is expected to appear by CCTV.
According to RCMP, on Dec. 24, 2025, officers at the Melfort detachment received a report of an infant in medical distress at a home in Melfort. Officers responded immediately and located EMS attending to an unresponsive infant under one year of age. EMS transported the infant to the hospital.
Police say the initial investigation determined the infant’s injuries were suspicious in nature. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit (HIU) and Prince Albert Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) took over the investigation. The infant died in hospital on Dec. 28, 202
