PRINCE ALBERT — The Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS) is continuing its investigation into the Christmas Day fire that destroyed the Salvation Army Community Services building and the city’s only warming centre.
The fire broke out on the evening of Dec. 25 in the 900 block of Central Avenue. Prince Albert Fire Department (PAFD) crews were called to the scene at 7:55 p.m. and initially attempted an interior attack, but heavy smoke, intense fire conditions and an early roof breach forced firefighters to retreat and shift to a defensive strategy.
Following the conclusion of the PAFD’s investigation, PAPS confirmed Thursday that their own investigation remains active.
“Now, investigators with the Prince Albert Police Service will continue working with PAFD as the police investigation progresses," the force said in a media release. "The police investigation will determine if the fire was a criminal act or not, by examining all evidence available."
The loss of the Salvation Army building has created a major gap in services for vulnerable residents, as it housed Prince Albert’s only warming centre and provided daily meals, showers, laundry, and other basic supports. Everything inside the facility was destroyed, and the organization is now assessing damage and beginning the process of rebuilding.
Anyone with information in relation to this fire is asked to contact the police at 306-953-4222. Anonymous tips can be provided to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
PAPS said they will provide any further updates in relation to this investigation when available.
