ESTEVAN — A southeast Saskatchewan man was arrested and charged, and then released a few days later, after violating the terms of his probation order.
Zachary Christopher Hillis, age 32, was in Estevan Provincial Court on Jan. 12. He was released with conditions for his next court appearance Feb. 9.
According to a news release from the Saskatchewan RCMP, on Jan. 9, the Estevan RCMP received a report of an assault at a residence in Frobisher.
The RCMP says an investigation determined an altercation occurred between two men at the residence and one of them sustained injuries described in the news release as non-life-threatening.
After an investigation, the Estevan and Carnduff RCMP reportedly arrested Hillis at a residence in Carnduff.
Hillis, who is listed as being from Carnduff, is charged with one count each of assault with a weapon and failing to comply with a probation order. According to information provided in court on Jan. 12, the weapon was a wooden chair.
Crown prosecutor Suzan Wurtz said she was willing to consent to Hillis’ release with largely the same conditions, although one was added to not contact the latest victim and another calls for Hillis’ approved residence to be in Estevan.
Hillis is scheduled to stand trial March 5 on a number of charges, but judge Mitch Miller suggested on Jan. 12 to adjourn some matters to Feb. 9 to address jurisdiction and other issues, as Hillis has charges from different areas.
He was sentenced to 18 months in custody and another 18 months of probation in May 2025 for drug and firearms offences, stemming from an arrest in June 2024. He was arrested again in October 2024 and held in custody. With remand credit, he had 219 days remaining to serve from the date of the sentencing on May 26, 2025, and was eventually released with the conditions.
