SASKATOON — A 23-year-old man is facing several charges after Saskatoon police say he fled from officers during an attempted traffic stop early Sunday morning.
Police tried to pull over a vehicle just before 1 a.m. on Jan. 11 in the Hudson Bay Industrial area near Idylwyld Drive North and 39th Street. According to police, the driver accelerated away at a high rate of speed, prompting officers to disengage. The vehicle was later seen heading north on Highway 12 out of the city.
Investigators determined the driver was unlawfully at large. The vehicle was spotted again a short time later as it re-entered Saskatoon on Highway 16, where officers used a tire deflation device near Beam Road.
Police say the vehicle continued into an industrial area before officers used a police vehicle to ram it and bring it to a stop in the 1900 block of First Avenue North. The suspect ran from the vehicle but was arrested a short distance away.
Officers say he was found carrying bear spray, a knife, and suspected crystal methamphetamine.
In addition to being unlawfully at large, the man is charged with several weapons offences, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, dangerous driving, and evading police.
