REGINA — Accidents in Regina can often occur at intersections throughout the city, especially at ones with higher rates of collisions.
SGI statistics outlines the three most accident-prone intersections in the city between 2022 and 2024.
The top intersection with collisions is Dewdney Avenue and Lewvan Drive, which saw an average of 38 collisions per year over those three years. Fleet St. / University Park Dr. & Victoria Ave. is second with an average of 31.67 collisions per year, followed by Lewvan Dr. and Parliament Ave. with 30.33 collisions on average per year. See video of these three intersections here.
SGI says collisions are reported in their system when certain criteria are met.
These include:
- Estimated repair costs for all vehicles and property exceed $5,000.
- Bodily injury or death occurs.
- An unregistered or unidentified vehicle is involved.
- A vehicle registered outside of Saskatchewan is involved.
- A vehicle is towed from the scene because of the collision.
- Drug or alcohol impairment is apparent.
What is causing the collisions?
Chris Warren, City of Regina director of roadways and transportation, said a major factor for collisions occurring between Dewdney Ave. and Lewvan Dr. is a protected permissive left turn.
“What that means is there's a portion of the north and southbound traffic that will have a turn left arrow, but then there's another portion that basically is now permissive, where people turning left have to yield for people going straight. And because of the higher speed here [and], because of the high traffic volumes, we do see several collisions as a result of that."
Warren also noted that the intersection has high peak-hour traffic volumes.
As for Fleet St. / University Park Dr. & Victoria Ave., Warren said collision numbers are caused by high rates of traffic.
Despite a solid amount of collisions, Warren said the city sees Fleet St. / University Park Dr. & Victoria Ave. as a “fairly safe intersection.”
“The left turns are protected. It also has a pedestrian crosswalk with a push-button activation indicator. So there are good traffic controls in place for this intersection.”
Improving intersection safety
Dewdney Ave. and Lewvan Dr. are set to undergo construction in 2026 to improve their left-turning lanes.
“We're going to be adding another northbound and southbound protected left turn lane to accommodate that traffic growth, those high traffic volumes,” said Warren.
He added, “We're really expecting that pass to reduce the rate of collisions because basically it will double the capacity, we'll have dual left turn lanes going north and south, and there will be a protected left turn lane.”
Warren mentioned these improvements were made possible by the City of Regina’s 2026-2027 budget.
Other high-volume traffic and pedestrian intersections are also targeted through the city’s New and Enhanced Intersections program.
“We actually install upgrades all the way up to including brand new signals to ensure that we're maintaining the maximum safety of the users of those intersections. And we typically do anywhere between four and six upgrades every year for that program,” said Warren.
Warren noted the city also has a traffic signal infrastructure program.
“We typically renew anywhere between eight and 12 intersections every year based on our available funding in our capital projects, capital funding. And when we upgrade those intersections, we're upgrading them with the newest technology available as well.”
