ESTEVAN — An incident at the Estevan Leisure Centre, an attempted scam and the arrest of a person wanted on warrants were all part of the weekend calls for the Estevan Police Service.
According to the EPS report for Jan. 18, a mischief incident at the Estevan Leisure Centre was reported, with a rug and a ceiling tile damaged. A suspect has been identified and the matter remains under investigation.
A well-being check was conducted on a youth reported to be at a local convenience store and not dressed for the weather. Members attended and located the youth a short distance away from the business. EPS said it was determined he had adequate clothing for the cold temperatures and was walking home from the store.
Officers and Estevan Fire Rescue Service personnel attended a fire alarm at a Hillside apartment complex. The alarm was determined to be unfounded, with no smoke or fire present.
EPS responded to two separate calls for service Jan. 17 in which the same person refused to leave two unrelated businesses. Upon police arrival, the man left each business without incident and, in one instance, was issued a trespass letter advising he was no longer permitted on the property.
Police assisted in keeping the peace while an individual retrieved personal belongings from a residence. EPS said the substantive matter was civil in nature and both parties were provided guidance on how to deal with the situation.
Members attended an apartment complex in response to a report of a tenant throwing items off a balcony. The matter remains under investigation.
Police responded to a residence following a report of a domestic disturbance. It was determined nothing physical had occurred between the parties, but some property damage had taken place. As a result, a 28-year-old Estevan woman was arrested and charged with failing to comply with conditions of her undertaking and mischief. She was later released, with a court date set for March.
A report was received of an individual attempting to purchase alcohol for minors. The matter remains under investigation.
Multiple compliance checks were conducted on individuals bound by court-ordered conditions. According to EPS, all those checked were found to be compliant.
EPS responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Souris Avenue South and Valley Street. Police said no injuries were reported, but emergency crews attended to confirm the well-being of the occupants. One of the vehicles was not drivable and was towed from the scene.
Several reports of downed powerlines were made to police during heavy winds. In each instance, EPS attended to ensure public safety until arrangements could be made with SaskPower and SaskTel to address the lines.
Members responded to a report of an unwanted man in a residence. Upon arrival, it was determined the man had already left the scene and nothing criminal had occurred.
An attempted scam was reported in which the caller posed as a SaskTel representative and advised the intended victim they owed money on an account. The complainant indicated they never had a SaskTel account. No funds or personal information were provided, and the matter has been referred to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
A traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle in the industrial area resulted in the arrest of an occupant who was wanted on warrants from two separate RCMP detachments. The individual was remanded in custody to appear in Estevan provincial court on Jan. 19 to address the matter.
EPS handled 29 calls for service from Jan. 16 to 18.
