REGINA — Legislative Landing came alive this past Saturday as families gathered for Winter in Wascana, a free outdoor event at the rink that transformed a cold January afternoon into a celebration of community, movement and winter fun.
People took part in the event, lacing up skates, exploring hands on ecology activities and enjoying being outside together. Winter in Wascana will continue every Saturday throughout January from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., giving families more chances to embrace the season.
The outdoor rink was the heart of the afternoon. Framed by one of Regina’s most iconic landscapes, it offered a welcoming space for skaters of all ages and abilities. Free youth sized skate rentals helped remove barriers, allowing more kids to step onto the ice and build confidence one glide at a time.
Off the ice, the Wascana Centre ecology team turned winter into a classroom without walls. Children tested how animals blend into snowy environments, searched for hidden objects in the snow and built miniature winter habitats using natural materials. The activities blended play with learning, showing how wildlife survives Saskatchewan’s harshest season.
Nearby, fire pits crackled as families warmed their hands and roasted marshmallows, adding a cozy rhythm to the afternoon. Between skating laps and snow based challenges, people paused to laugh, talk and reconnect.
Organizers say the strong turnout shows there is a real appetite for outdoor winter programming. Each Saturday in January offers another opportunity for families to make memories, try something new and enjoy the season together.
For those who missed this weekend, the invitation remains open. Bring your skates, dress warm and discover why winter at Wascana is quickly becoming one of Regina’s most cherished seasonal traditions by watching our short SaskToday video.
