SASKATOON — Police have charged two men after an early-morning break-and-enter escalated into an armed robbery and vehicle pursuit on the city’s north end.
Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) officers were called around 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 20 to a home in the Westmount neighbourhood, in the 1100 block of Avenue J North, where a 43-year-old resident reported returning to find two unknown men inside. Police say one of the intruders was armed with a sawed-off shotgun. The victim was assaulted as the suspects stole his wallet and tried to take the keys to his truck before fleeing in a Ford Taurus.
Patrol officers spotted the vehicle a short time later and attempted a traffic stop. According to police, the driver refused to pull over, leading officers on a pursuit along Wanuskewin Road and McOrmond Drive. The chase ended when the Taurus became stuck in a snowbank on Range Road 3050.
Two men ran from the vehicle but were tracked by an SPS canine unit. One suspect sustained injuries that are consistent with a dog bite. Investigators later determined the Taurus had been reported stolen.
A 40-year-old man and a 33-year-old man are now facing more than 10 charges, including armed robbery, dangerous driving, evading police, theft, and breach of probation.
Police say the victim’s injuries aren’t life-threatening.
Members of the SPS General Investigation Section continue to investigate the incident. Police say further charges are expected.
