The January Outlook for Principal Field Crops from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada includes seeded acreage predictions for all the various crops in the upcoming year.
AAFC believes Canadian farmers will seed a smaller acreage to cereal crops.
They predict wheat acreage will drop 2 per cent, with durum down 7 per cent, barley down 6 per cent and oats down 2 per cent.
Oilseed acreage is predicted to rise with canola up 2 per cent, flax up 1 per cent and mustard acreage recovering by 20 per cent.
Big acreage drops are expected in pulse crops with peas down 15 per cent, lentils down 10 per cent and chickpeas down 18 per cent.
Canary seed is another crop expected to take an acreage hit – down 19 per cent.
