Crop prices for the Manitoba Crop Insurance program were released this week at Ag Days in Brandon.
Saskatchewan Crop Insurance prices are yet to be announced, but typically are very close to the Manitoba values.
Manitoba’s Crop Insurance prices are based off a December forecast from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, while Saskatchewan uses a January price forecast from AAFC.
For most crops, insured prices for Manitoba are higher than observers expected.
On canola, the crop insurance price is $14.74 per bushel, well above last year’s price. Hard red spring wheat is at $7.89 a bushel. Manitoba doesn’t grow much durum, but the spring wheat price is a bit higher than durum, which is at $7.76. Barley is at $4.57 a bushel, oats is $3.93 and flax is $17.78.
One of the only crops coming in lower than expected is peas at $6.26 a bushel.
The announcement of Saskatchewan Crop Insurance price levels is typically done about a month from now.
Personally, I had expected crop insurance prices and therefore coverage levels to be lower this year, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
