CUMBERLAND HOUSE — Update, Jan. 31, 1:30 p.m.: As a result of continued investigation, the Homicide Investigative Unit arrested an adult male on Jan. 30.
Skye Lasas, 24, from Waterhen First Nation is charged with one count second-degree murder..
The deceased male has been identified as a 37 year old from Waterhen First Nation. His family has been notified and victim services made available to them. We are not identifying him at this time. Investigation has determined the male and the deceased were known to one another.
Skye Lasas is scheduled to appear in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on Feb. 2.
The Homicide Investigative Unit continues to investigate.
Third update, Jan. 30, 4:03 p.m.: Two people have been charged after a shooting took place in Cumberland House on Jan. 22.
On Jan. 22 at around 8 a.m., Cumberland House RCMP received a report of an injured male at a business in Cumberland House. RCMP officers immediately responded, along with EMS, and located the male with gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital by EMS with injuries described as serious. Police say they do not have an update on their condition.
The investigation determined two males with firearms broke into a residence in Cumberland House. An altercation occurred and one of them was shot by a third male who was inside the residence. The initial two males fled – the injured male went to the business mentioned previously.
RCMP officers remained at the scene and Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services, Critical Incident Response Team, Serious Crimes Unit and Prince Albert Federal Investigation Section were engaged to assist. Around 1:40 p.m., the male exited the residence and was arrested without incident. Two other individuals exited the residence. One was arrested on separate charges and the other was released without charges.
A 29-year-old man, from Cumberland House, is charged with:
- one count, discharge firearm with intent; and
- one count, aggravated assault.
The accused is scheduled to appear in La Ronge Provincial Court on Jan. 30.
On Jan. 25, a 20-year-old suspect, from Cumberland House, was located in a vehicle in Cumberland House and was arrested by RCMP. In a search of the vehicle, officers located ammunition in the glove box. The suspect is charged with:
- one count, extortion;
- one count, break and enter with intent;
- one count, discharge firearm with intent;
- one count, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
- one count, unauthorized possession of a firearm; and
- one count, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle.
The accused is scheduled to appear in La Ronge Provincial Court on Feb. 5.
The investigation continues.
In addition to RCMP officers, the Saskatchewan Marshalls Services and conservation officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch assisted with scene security during this incident.
Second update, Jan. 23, 2:49 p.m.: Cumberland House RCMP have charged a man after a victim was seriously injured in a shooting.
On Jan. 22 at approximately 8 a.m., Cumberland House RCMP received a report of an injured person outside a business in Cumberland House.
Officers immediately responded and located a male youth with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. They provided first aid to the victim until EMS arrived. The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries described as serious in nature.
Investigators identified a possible suspect, including a vehicle he was known to operate. Officers began searching for the suspect with the assistance of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services.
Officers determined the suspect was inside a residence in Cumberland House. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Critical Incident Response Team was engaged to assist with his arrest.
Conservation officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch and the Saskatchewan Marshals Service assisted Cumberland House RCMP in maintaining a perimeter around the residence.
At approximately 1:40 p.m., Cumberland House RCMP arrested the suspect without incident.
The investigation continued with the assistance of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Services.
As a result, a 29-year-old man, from Cumberland House, is charged with:
– one count, aggravated assault; and
– one count, discharge firearm with intent.
He is scheduled to appear in La Ronge Provincial Court on Jan. 26
Update, Jan. 23: Police advised on Jan. 22 that the person of interest has been located and arrested by Saskatchewan RCMP.

Original post, Jan. 22: There is an increased police presence in Cumberland House.
Saskatchewan RCMP is investigating a shooting that occurred early in the morning on Jan. 22 in Cumberland House, and left one person injured.
People are asked to avoid the areas where police officers are present, and follow any police direction provided, RCMP said.
Officers are currently searching for a person of interest, who is described as a man in his 20s, with black hair and brown eyes. He is known to drive a blue 2008 Chrysler 300 with Saskatchewan licence plate 215 NGG.
