MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Now that’s more like it.
After going through a tough outing in their first game at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, it was all systems go for Jolene Campbell and her Team Saskatchewan foursome on Sunday afternoon as they picked up a 7-6 victory over B.C.’s Taylor Reese-Hansen.
Campbell and her Regina Callie rink of third Robyn Silvernagle, second Rachel Big Eagle and lead Dayna Demmans are now 1-1 in Pool A through the first five draws at the Canadian women’s curling championship.
Campbell ended up with the hammer to start things off, and after an opening game where it seemed as if every end had a dozen rocks in play, things were clean in the opening frame and she’d throw her final rock through the house for a blank.
And after a night where she couldn’t catch a break, Campbell got one in the second. With two Saskatchewan rocks in the back of the house, Reese-Hansen came in way light on a draw attempt, and Campbell would put her final shot in the eight foot for three and a 3-0 lead.
It was the first time Campbell picked up multiple points with the hammer in the tournament, after going 0-for-5 in the opener.
Things set up better for B.C. in the second end, with a draw to the top of the four foot giving Reese-Hansen her first deuce and Saskatchewan a 3-2 lead heading into the fourth.
Campbell ended up getting a hit and roll for one that end, and a hit and stick with her final shot in the fifth saw Sask laying three all top eight foot. Reese-Hansen tried to get rid of them all, but would end up giving up a steal of two for a 6-2 Saskatchewan lead at the break.
B.C. would get that deuce right back in the sixth and Campbell blanked the seventh, making it a 6-4 contest with three ends to go.
Things set up well for Saskatchewan in the eighth, as Campbell had shot rock touching top four foot with her final rock and had an open hit for two, but the shot rock would roll too far and she’d settle for one.
A nice triple take-out by Silvernagle got Campbell out of trouble in the ninth, and Reese-Hansen would come up far short of the rings on a draw for two with her last shot, making it a 7-5 Saskatchewan lead coming home.
Campbell didn’t leave much up to chance in the 10th, ending up with a wide-open hit for the victory that she wouldn’t miss.
The stats themselves told the story — after curling 63 per cent as a team in their opener, they hit 87 per cent this time around. Campbell was a perfect 100 per cent through the first five ends and ended up shooting 81 per cent, while Silvernagle hit 89, Big Eagle 86 and Demmans 92, wide-range improvements across the board.
Other results from the fifth draw saw Manitoba’s Kaitlyn Lawes score five in the ninth for an 11-6 win over Ontario’s Hailey Armstrong, Canada’s Kerri Einarson take a 9-6 win over Nova Scotia’s Taylour Stevens and Quebec’s Jolianne Fortin down Yukon’s Bayly Scoffin 10-5
Results from the morning draw on Sunday saw Manitoba’s Beth Peterson score five in the eighth to close out a 13-3 win over New Brunswick’s Melodie Forsythe, Northern Ontario’s Krista Scharf score seven over the final three ends for a 12-5 win against Newfoundland’s Mackenzie Mitchell, Nova Scotia’s Christina Black defeat Alberta’s Selena Sturmay 9-6 and Nunavut’s Julia Weagle turn an early lead into an 8-5 win over P.E.I.’s Amanda Power.
