ESTEVAN — An Estevan man was arrested twice last week due to multiple infractions.
According to the Jan. 22 report from the Estevan Police Service, during the dayshift, members attended to a central Estevan apartment complex for a report of someone possibly living in a vacant apartment without authorization. Nobody was located in the apartment at the time of police attendance, and the EPS said further investigation would occur.
Members then arrested an Estevan man during the nightshift, following a short foot pursuit, for breaking and entering a dwelling due to the apartment complex complaint. He was lodged in cells, charged and released on conditions in the morning.
The Jan. 23 report said the EPS received a call from a local business of a man who had committed a theft.
The EPS said it then received a call from a resident about someone banging on a door and yelling. Members attended and obtained a description of the individual, which matched the man from the business theft. He was located and arrested. As he had been released on conditions the day prior, he was held in custody to appear in Estevan Provincial Court on Jan. 26. He remains in custody.
In other recent police news, the EPS received a report Jan. 21 of a break and enter at a residence in east-central Estevan. Heavy damage was done to the door as a result of forced entry. A potential suspect has been identified and the matter remains under investigation.
Police received a report of a suspicious man inside a central Estevan bank. Members spoke to him and he left without issue.
A suspicious man was reported to be loitering near a dumpster in north-central Estevan. Patrol members attended the area following the complaint but he was not located.
A well-being check was conducted on a woman at the request of a local organization that was concerned about her behaviour during recent contact. She was located and determined to be safe and well.
Members and Estevan EMS staff responded to a woman causing a disturbance at a residence in the Valleyview area. It was determined that her behaviour was due to a medical condition and she was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for assessment.
The EPS received a report Jan. 22 of mischief to an ATM at a central Estevan bank. The matter remains under investigation.
The EPS received a report of a man entering an establishment in north Estevan while prohibited under the Trespass Act. The EPS says the matter remains under investigation.
Police received a complaint Jan. 23 regarding youths disturbing a neighbour by throwing debris in a yard and flashing indecent images out a window towards the complainant. Members attended, warned the youths and advised the parents of their children’s behaviour.
The EPS received a report from 911, advising of a call on the emergency line from a child who was mocking the operator. The GPS co-ordinates of the phone were provided, police attended and warned the individuals in the home about misusing the 911 system.
Police attended to a residence where a domestic disturbance was taking place. Members determined alcohol was a factor and a temporary solution was mediated for the evening.
Following a traffic stop by the patrol division, a man who had recently moved to Estevan was arrested for impaired driving by drug. An evaluation by a drug recognition expert was conducted, and he was subsequently charged with impaired driving and released from custody. His vehicle was seized and his driver’s licence was suspended.
The EPS received a request for a well-being check Jan. 24 on an Estevan man. The individual was contacted and found to be safe and well, and has been connected to community services.
Police attended to Affinity Place for a report of a disturbance between Estevan and Regina fans at a hockey game. Members attended, supervised the individuals and de-escalated their interaction until all parties left the facility following the game.
Members attended to a two-vehicle collision in a north-central business parking lot. One of the vehicles was towed from the scene and the matter remains under investigation.
EPS members and Estevan Fire Rescue Service members attended to a vehicle fire at a parking lot in the 900-block of Fifth Street. No injuries were reported from the fire and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze but the EPS said the vehicle was a total loss. The cause of the fire is believed to be non-criminal.
Police received a Report Impaired Drivers line call based on erratic driving. The vehicle was located and a traffic stop conducted, during which time it was determined that the driver had his cellular phone mounted to the dash and was video chatting while driving. The driver was issued a warning as use of a cell phone in that manner constitutes distracted driving despite the driver not holding the device.
EPS members were kept busy during the night shift with unruly individuals in custody in the EPS detention facility. One of the individuals was disruptive and obstructing proper supervision. A second prisoner reported medical concerns and was vomiting. He was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, assessed and subsequently returned to detention cells several hours later. Both individuals were to appear in Estevan Provincial Court on Jan. 26.
