MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — It was a bit of the good and a bit of the bad for Saskatchewan’s Jolene Campbell at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Monday.
Campbell and her Regina Callie foursome of third Robyn Silvernagle, second Rachel Big Eagle and lead Dayna Demmans opened the day with a 6-5 victory over Northwest Territories’ Nicky Kaufman before falling 7-2 to Quebec’s Jolieanne Fortin in the evening draw at the national women’s curling championship in Mississauga, Ont.
As a result, Campbell finds herself in a five-way tie for third place in Pool A with a 2-2 record at the 18-team event.
Saskatchewan’s morning game against Kaufman, third Megan Koehler, second Sydney Galusha and lead Ella Skauge was a back-and-forth battle from start to finish, with the Territories getting the hammer in the first end and putting up a pair of blanks before being forced to one in the third.
The teams then exchanged single points the next three ends to sit tied 2-2 heading into the seventh, where Kaufman would put up the first deuce of the game. A steal the next end put her foursome ahead 5-2, but that’s when Campbell would get things rolling.Saskatchewan would pick up a deuce in the ninth to get back within one and then steal a pair the next end for the sudden comeback win.
The entire team put on an impressive shooting performance in the victory, hitting 93 per cent overall. Demmans led the way with a perfect 100 per cent game, while Big Eagle shot 90 per cent, Silvernagle 88 and Campbel 93.
It was a far tougher outing against Quebec in the nightcap, as Campbell struggled to get anything going until the later ends.
Fortin, third Emily Lafrance, second Megan Lafrance and lead Megane Fortin blanked the first end and were forced to one in the second but kept the pressure on the whole game, racking up a series of steals. That included one in the fourth, two more in the fifth and another two in the sixth for a 6-0 lead.
Campbell got one back in the seventh and stole another in the eighth, but after Quebec picked up one in the ninth, the teams would shake hands.
Saskatchewan curled 82 per cent, with Campbell at 79 per cent, Silvernagle 83, Big Eagle 85 and Demmans 81.
Other results from the morning draw saw Canada’s Kerri Einarson take an 8-2 win over Quebec, B.C.’s Taylor Reese-Hansen roll to an 11-4 win over Yukon’s Bayly Scoffin and Manitoba’s Kaitlyn Lawes roar out to a 7-0 lead before defeating Nova Scotia’s Taylour Stevens 8-2.
