HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt community is responding with condolences and solidarity following a deadly collision in Alberta that claimed the lives of three junior hockey players.
City of Humboldt Mayor Rob Muench issued a statement after learning of the tragedy, emphasizing support for the Town of Stavely and all those affected.
“The City of Humboldt and our residents extend our deepest condolences to the Town of Stavely, Alberta,” Muench said. “We stand with your community as you mourn this tragic loss, and our thoughts are with all those affected.”
Support has also come from the Humboldt Broncos organization, a community that remains deeply connected to loss in sport following the 2018 bus crash.
“There are no words — only heavy hearts,” the Broncos said in a social media post. “The Humboldt Broncos extend our deepest condolences to the Southern Alberta Mustangs organization and to all those impacted by today’s tragedy. We stand with you. We mourn with you. We are with you.”
The Southern Alberta Mustangs, based in Stavely, confirmed Monday afternoon that three players had been killed while travelling to practice. The players have been identified in other social media posts as JJ Wright, Cameron Casorso and Caden Fine.
According to CityNews Edmonton, emergency crews were called around 11 a.m. to the intersection of Highway 2 and 55 Avenue in Stavely, about 100 kilometres south of Calgary, following reports of a two-vehicle collision.
RCMP say a semi-truck hauling gravel was travelling northbound on Highway 2 when it collided with a small passenger vehicle heading eastbound on 55 Avenue.
The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
