ESTEVAN — The Estevan Police Service is investigating a scam involving Bitcoin.
According to the Feb. 2 police report, the EPS received a call from a victim who was contacted by someone that sounded like their employer. The scammer directed the victim to deposit funds into a Bitcoin machine.
The victim reported a significant loss and identified a suspicious individual parked in a vehicle in the area who might be a suspect. The identity of the suspect has been determined and the matter remains under investigation.
That same day, EPS patrol members located an individual alleged to have committed an assault several days prior. The man was arrested without incident and made a first appearance by telephone in Weyburn Provincial Court on Feb. 3 to speak to the matter.
EPS members responded several times to the same individuals involved in separate domestic disturbances related to the breakdown of their relationship. In each instance, members mediated the situation, kept the peace while property exchanges occurred, and attempted to provide guidance to prevent any allegations of criminal behaviour from their interactions.
A noise complaint related to loud music was dealt with by EPS members. The resident was warned under the City of Estevan noise bylaw and the music was turned off.
Members attended to an alarm at a restaurant in northeast Estevan. On arrival, the building was found to be secure with no evidence of attempted forced entry. A keyholder was not available to provide access to the building and the alarm is believed to have been unfounded.
