In 1947, the Provincial Government created the GeoMemorial Program as a way to honour the service of those who sacrificed for Canada or the province.
On Feb. 17, 2015, the Government of Saskatchewan announced eight new geographical features would be named. They included Blair Lake, named after Private Alfred Edward Wesley Blair from Chaplin. He was part of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and parachuted into France during World War II. He was subsequently killed in action on June 9, 1944. Greff Lake was named for Master Corporal Byron Greff from Swift Current, who served with the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry, killed in Kabul, Afghanistan, in October of 2011.
Since 1947, more than 4,000 geographical features have been named in Saskatchewan.
