Man charged after stolen semi-truck flees from police near NB

NORTH BATTLEFORD — Battlefords RCMP arrested and charged a man after a stolen semi-truck driver fled from police near North Battleford.

On Feb. 18 at approximately 7:30 a.m., Battlefords RCMP were notified of a stolen semi-truck approaching North Battleford on Highway 16. Officers responded immediately. They located the semi-truck and attempted to pull it over. The driver fled from police and continued down Highway 16 at a high speed.

Additional responding officers blocked the highway to ensure the semi-truck remained a safe distance from the public.

Officers set up a tire deflation device. The semi-truck ran over the device but continued down Highway 16. The driver then struck a second tire deflation device that officers set up, causing its tires to begin to disintegrate. The semi-truck continued driving on the tire rims. It ultimately veered off the road and came to a stop.

Battlefords RCMP and Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services contained the vehicle. A man exited the vehicle and was arrested without incident.

As a result of this investigation, a 38-year-old man, from Camrose, Alta., has been charged with:

• one count, operation while prohibited;
• one count, flight from police;
• one count, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle; and
• one count, possession of property over $5,000 obtained by crime.

The accused appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on Feb. 19.

“Our officers worked quickly to ensure other drivers stayed a safe distance from a dangerous situation,” said Inspector Ryan How, Battlefords RCMP Detachment Commander, in the release. “A stolen semi travelling at high speeds on a highway is incredibly risky for everyone involved. The leadership, communication, and tactics used by our officers are a direct reflection of their commitment to keeping our communities safe.”
