STAR BLANKET CREE NATION— Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit has charged a youth with second-degree murder following a homicide on Star Blanket Cree Nation.
On Feb. 18 at approximately 12:05 a.m., File Hills First Nations Police Service responded to a report of a homicide on Star Blanket Cree Nation.
Officers located a deceased adult man at a residence and arrested a male teen at the scene.
Because File Hills First Nations Police Service does not have a major crimes branch, Saskatchewan RCMP was engaged to take full carriage of the investigation.
Following investigation, RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit charged the teen on Feb. 18 with one count of second-degree murder.
The accused cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police said the victim and the accused were known to each other but are not providing additional details about their relationship or the victim’s identity.
The youth is scheduled to appear in Fort Qu’Appelle provincial court on Feb. 19.
The Homicide Investigation Unit, formerly known as the Major Crimes Unit, is part of the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Major Crimes Branch. The unit investigates homicides, suspicious deaths, missing persons cases where foul play is suspected or likely, explosions believed to be criminal in nature involving death or injury and other incidents as directed.
