CANORA — The Canora/Sturgis RCMP responded to 26 calls from Feb. 12 to Feb. 19, some of which included:
- one abandoned vehicle,
- one 911 Act call,
- three assaults,
- one breach of peace,
- one break and enter,
- one disturbing the peace,
- one failure to attend court,
- three frauds under $5,000,
- one fraud,
- four Mental Health Act calls,
- one municipal bylaw,
- one offender management,
- one uttering threats,
- one suspicious person,
- one theft over $5,000,
- five traffic offenses, and
- one wellbeing check.
Fraudulent STARS Lottery call
On Feb. 12, the Canora RCMP investigated a fraud. A woman reported receiving a call from STARS Lottery saying that she had won a brand-new SUV and $375,000. To claim the prize the woman was directed to purchase an iTunes card and provide the iTunes card number over the phone. Only scammers will tell you to buy a gift card and give them the numbers on the back. No real business or government agency will ever tell you to buy a gift card to pay them.
Intoxicated assault
The Canora RCMP were dispatched on Feb. 13 to a report of an assault in progress outside a residence in Sturgis. The caller reported a naked man had pulled a woman out of a vehicle and the woman was calling for help. Police went to a residence in Sturgis and arrested an intoxicated man for assault. A 38-year-old man from Sturgis was charged assault and resisting arrest. The man was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court. The man and the woman were known to each other.
Odd behaviour: drug use
On Feb. 13, the Canora RCMP were dispatched to a report of a man shoveling snow wearing only thermal underwear and that a fist fight had occurred outside. Police attended a home in Canora and determined no harm came to the man and that drug use was a contributing factor to the odd behaviour.
Getting stuck leads to arrest
The Canora RCMP investigated a report that a vehicle was stuck in the ditch east of Canora on Highway 5 on Feb. 13. Police located a Pontiac Torrent in the ditch. The registered owner of the vehicle was arrested on scene for an outstanding warrant of arrest for assault out of Regina.
Injury but no assault
The Canora RCMP were dispatched on Feb. 13 to an assault in Canora. The caller reported a man had a large laceration to their arm. Police went to a home in Canora and learned no assault occurred but there was an injury. The man was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Nurse complaints not police matter
On Feb. 18, a woman called 911 requesting assistance at the hospital as she had a rash all over herself and the nurses were not helping her. Police spoke to hospital staff who were aware of the phone call made to 911. Police assistance was not further required.
