SASKATOON — A police officer was assaulted and a police-issued carbine magazine stolen during a disturbance involving several youths at a city facility in Lawson Heights area on Thursday afternoon.
Police were called to the 200 block of Primrose Drive around 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 19 for a report of a missing youth. When an officer arrived, they located the youth inside the facility with a group of others. While the officer was addressing that group, another youth from a separate group began confronting an employee.
According to police, the officer moved to intervene when the youth became aggressive and began assaulting them. Several youths joined in. During the struggle, a carbine magazine attached to the officer’s body armour became dislodged. One of the suspects grabbed the magazine and fled.
Police say the officer deployed their taser, causing the group to retreat. The officer arrested the 15-year-old male who initiated the assault. A search of the youth found he was carrying a knife.
Additional officers responded and located a 14-year-old female believed to be involved in the assault. Further investigation led police to a home in the 300 block of Streb Crescent, where a 16-year-old male was arrested and the stolen magazine recovered.
All three youths are now facing multiple charges, including assaulting a police officer, obstructing a police officer, possession of a prohibited device without a license (carbine magazine), robbery, and weapons-related offences.
