It’s one of the biggest weeks of the year for the University of Regina Cougars as a national championship lands right here at home and several teams hit the road chasing banners of their own.
There’s a championship buzz around the Caledonian Curling Club as the U of R plays host to the 2026 U SPORTS/CCAA Curling Championships, with action running Tuesday through Saturday.
The Cougars are doubled up in the field with Carter Williamson skipping the men’s squad and Chloe Johnston guiding the women’s side against the best university and collegiate rinks in the country.
The women’s draw features Alberta, Calgary, Guelph, McMaster, Memorial, New Brunswick and Queen’s, while the men’s event welcomes Alberta, Calgary, Carleton, Dalhousie, Memorial, Wilfrid Laurier and York.
It’s wall-to-wall curling all week with the U SPORTS round robin running nightly through Friday before the weekend playdowns decide national champions.
Women’s Basketball – U SPORTS No. 4
The Cougars women’s basketball team earned their way into the national conversation weeks ago, now they’re pushing for a spot on the national stage.
Cara Misskey was electric on Saturday night, stuffing the stat sheet with 22 points, seven boards, six assists and five steals to power Regina past UBC Okanagan 74-48 in the Canada West quarterfinal.
That sets up a heavyweight showdown this Friday in Vancouver as Regina visits UBC with a berth to the U SPORTS Final 8 on the line.
Track & Field – Championship Season Begins
Championship season has arrived, and the Cougars head to Saskatoon for the Canada West Championships on Friday and Saturday.
Regina enters the meet with firepower across the board. Femi Akinloye is the top-ranked athlete in the men’s 60 metres, while Brett MacLean and Ian Teichler sit near the front in both the 1500 and 3000. Shelaine Pritchard is a double threat in both the long jump and shot put, and both 4×200-metre relay teams are ranked No. 1.
This is the first of two big weeks for the track program, which will close the season at the U SPORTS Championships in early March in Winnipeg.
