REGINA — In this final weekend of Frost Regina, cold temperatures have caused organizers to adjust some of the timetables.
Saturday at 1:30 p.m., the Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) said its Frost activities had re-opened after a temporary delay due to extreme cold weather conditions. Earlier that morning, organizers had postponed the opening as temperatures fell below REAL’s operating threshold of -20°C (without wind chill).
The Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) implements established safety protocols during periods of inclement or unsafe weather. The safety of employees and patrons remains the organization’s top priority, said the association in its release Saturday.
Once temperatures rose above -20°C, conditions were deemed safe to proceed and FROST @REAL re-opened for the day.
The Regina Downtown Business Improvement District announced just before noon that outdoor activities downtown would be put off until 2 p.m. and run until 7 p.m. They encouraged people to attend the indoor events planned.
Outdoor events downtown had to be shut down early Friday evening, according to Frost Regina's Facebook page.
Organizers were expecting timetables may have to be adjusted as the weather forecast was for wind chills as low as -37 at times. At 3 p.m. Saturday, Regina's temperature was -18, but it was experiencing a wind chill of -28, with that expected to drop to -39 overnight.
“The Frost team is looking at the weather and making sure that it's safe for everyone attending, but also for employees and volunteers,” said Teale Orban, director of destination stewardship with Tourism Regina.
Orban said each location for Frost Regina has parameters for dealing with colder temperatures and encouraged visitors to check out their website for updates on event status.
