MOOSE JAW – Moose Jaw RCMP is urging the public to be on the lookout for potential emails that look like they are coming from the RCMP, but are actually a phishing scam.
According to Moose Jaw RCMP, they received a report of an individual who received an email that stated that ‘unacceptable activity’ was detected on their network, and that they were summoned before the RCMP.
A PDF was attached to the email, signed by an individual purporting to be with the RCMP, and which included the RCMP crest, according to their news release. However, the RCMP confirms the email is not from a legitimate RCMP email address and has been determined to be a phishing scam.
Police are urging anyone who receives a suspected scam email to contact local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Saskatchewan RCMP can be contacted by calling 310-RCMP, and tips can also be submitted anonymously to Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers.com. You can also make a report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at https://reportcyberandfraud.canada.ca/.
In a news release Moose Jaw RCMP is also taking time to remind people to take precautions against phishing scams with the following tips:
Do not click on links or download attachments in unsolicited text messages or emails;
Never send personal, credit card or banking details in response to unsolicited messages, and do not enter those on any website if you are uncertain the site is genuine;
Always take a moment to verify the source of messages received, and note that red flags include misspellings or unusual email addresses.
