REGINA — The first Regina City Council meeting of this year will have a few key items on the agenda.
The upcoming Wednesday meeting at 1 p.m. includes:
By-law to increase bus fares
City council will vote to adopt a by-law to increase fares by 10 per cent on Regina Transit and Paratransit.
During 2026/2027 budget deliberations, council approved the increase to trim the mill rate down to 10.9 per cent.
According to documents, a single adult/youth/senior fare would cost $3.50 (previously $3.25), while a month pass would be $97, up from $88.
If approved, the new fares would come into effect on April 1.
Improvements to construction
Mayor Chad Bachynski has put forward a motion to improve construction practices.
Bachynski is seeking a report on addressing items, including procurement processes and opportunities for innovation, execution strategies to expedite project delivery, and the possibility of 24-hour construction work.
During his year-end interview, Bachynski mentioned looking at ways administration can integrate 24-hour construction.
“[I want to] have administration take a look at how we're executing construction today, and what is that kind of ratio or balance between construction execution efficiency and impact to businesses and residences.”
If passed, council would receive a report in Q1 of 2027.
Official Community Plan
In early February, Regina’s executive committee discussed the city’s Official Community Plan (OCP), which plans for population growth, new housing and jobs.
A new version of the plan includes phase-in approaches for neighbourhoods based on available infrastructure.
Bachynski called the new policy much more data-driven.
“It accounts for greenfield development, it accounts for intensification, and it accounts for addressing some service level issues that we see in the city, like basement flooding.”
