After 68 years of being on the job, Mr. Clean has decided to retire. At a mock news conference on social media this week, it was announced the well known Procter and Gamble mascot would be moving on to new adventures. It’s unclear as to where the iconic character will be going, but he was spotted wearing an island shirt, which hints he may be off to a tropical paradise.
Mr. Clean debuted in 1958 as a real-life mascot for the cleaning company before transitioning into an animated character. Mr. Clean was first portrayed by actor House J. Peters, who, at the time, was best known for starring in low budget movies and westerns. He played Mr. Clean until the 1960’s in television commercials and his likeness remains to this day despite having passed away in 2008 at the age of 92.
The product will remain on store shelves for the foreseeable future, however a much larger announcement is expected on March 4th regarding what’s next now that Mr. Clean himself is retiring.
Congratulations to Mr. Clean on a spotless record for 68 years.
@mrclean While our products will continue to battle your dirt and grime, Mr. Clean, well, first name Veritably, (yes, really), is off to new adventures. We know his journey will be fulfilling, and we support his decision. #MrCleanRetires #BreakingNews #StayTuned
