REGINA — A decision to increase Regina’s transit fares has been pushed back.
Ward 8 Coun. Shanon Zachidniak, who voiced her concerns about the fare increase, requested more time.
“I’m asking for some additional time to seek some additional options to address the concerns that have been raised with this bylaw.”
Council had planned to vote on the bylaw at Wednesday’s meeting, with the 10 per cent transit fare increases to come into effect on April 1.
The fare increases are a result of council trimming down the eventually passed 10.9 per cent mill rate increase. The proposed 10 per cent fair hike increase comes from adding $585,000 in revenue each year for the city, which equates to a 0.18 mill rate.
Roughly 15 delegates wished to speak on the matter, with the city receiving five letters on the topic.
Kurtis Doney, deputy city manager of city operations, outlined the losses the city will incur by pushing the vote month.
“Approximately $36,000 in lost revenue for every two weeks that we delay.”
The proposed 10 per cent increase would see fares for a single adult/youth/senior fare cost $3.50 (previously $3.25), while a month pass would be $97, up from $88.
Zachidniak has previously recommended council potentially tap into reserves to cover any fare increases for 2026 before looking into phase-in approaches.
Council will now debate the matter on March 11.
