For the past several years the residents of Fort Qu’Appelle and surrounding area have been embracing winter with their winter family festival. The Fort Winter Festival starts Friday night and continues through Sunday with events taking place throughout the community, in the fort, and on Echo Lake.
The opening ceremonies will happen at the Prairie Co-op Rexentre starting at 6:30pm prior to the Fort Knox Jr. B hockey game against the Richardson Pioneers Southern Rebels of Assiniboia. This will be game one in their playoff series.
“At the first intermission around 8:00 we’ll have fireworks being set off in Fort Qu’Appelle,” said volunteer Stan Bellegarde

Events start at 10am throughout the community on Saturday including the bouncy castles, inflatable t-ball, petting zoo, public skating, and trade show. Visitors will have to purchase buttons to attend all the events which are $10 for adults, $5 for kids, and free for age 3 and younger. Buttons can be purchased at any of the locations where events will be happening.
For those who have not seen the Grey Cup yet, visitors will have a chance to see it at the Fort Qu’Appelle Campground this Saturday from 3-5pm and the Lion’s Club will be holding a pancake breakfast from 9-12 at the Legion hall on Sunday morning. Other attractions include the uphill drag races at Mission Ridge Park and live music throughout Saturday in the fort.

One of the most talked about events is the annual polar bear dip which takes place on the Echo Lake ice at 2pm Saturday. The event is monitored by the Fort Qu’Appelle Fire Department and acts as a unique fundraiser for the organization. It features members of the RCMP, business leaders, and citizens jumping into ice cold lake water.
