SASKATOON — The sentencing of a teenage girl who admitted to setting a fellow student on fire inside Evan Hardy Collegiate, an attack that left the victim and a teacher seriously injured is set for this morning.
The 16-year-old pleaded guilty in December 2025 to attempted murder for the attack on a former friend at Evan Hardy Collegiate in September 2024.
The accused also pleaded guilty to unlawfully causing bodily harm to a teacher who came to the victim’s aid.
The sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. at the Court of King’s Bench in Saskatoon.
The attacker and the victim can’t be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
At the time of the attack, the accused was 14 years old and the victim was 15.
The attacker was previously reported to have admitted to splashing lighter fluid on her fellow student and then setting her on fire.
A witness said the fire spread within seconds from the victim’s hair and face to her shoulders, back and stomach as she screamed: “Help!”
When teachers arrived, they told the girl to drop to the ground and roll. One teacher took off his shirt and used it to try to put out the flames. The fire damaged the girl’s hands and her face and also burned skin from her arms. She was taken to hospital in serious condition. The teacher who tried to help was also seriously injured, suffering burns to his hands.
The Crown had previously expected to request that the attacker be sentenced as an adult, which would carry a more severe penalty, but it is no longer pursuing that plan.
The judge ordered a psychological assessment of the attacker.
