SASKATOON — An 18 year old is facing multiple charges after police say he falsely confessed to a murder during an active homicide investigation.
According to court documents, Avyn Ahenakew, 18, was charged with public mischief with intent to mislead after allegedly causing a Saskatoon police officer to continue a homicide investigation based on a false confession.
On Feb. 7, Ahenakew was charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault. On Feb. 26, members of the Saskatoon Police Service arrested him at the Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre and charged him with accessory after the fact to manslaughter in the death of Kiefer Kichemonia-Strongquill, accessory after the fact to aggravated assault, public mischief, and obstruction of justice.
The charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault have since been withdrawn.
Ahenakew appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Feb. 27. He was remanded in custody and is now scheduled to appear on March 2 for a bail hearing.
Kichemonia-Strongquill was the city’s first homicide victim of 2026. Saskatoon police say two men were brought to St. Paul’s Hospital with stab wounds on Feb. 3. Police received a report around 5:30 a.m. that two 25-year-old men had arrived at the hospital seeking treatment. One of the men later died from his injuries. The second man remains in stable condition, according to Saskatoon Police Service.
The Major Crime Unit continues to investigate.
