REGINA — A new community garden will be established in Eastbrook.
Last week, city council approved the Arcola East Community Association (AECA) to oversee the garden in the south portion of Maka Park.
Crystal Mitchell of AECA said, “The community garden will feature 98 garden plots, including 12 accessible rake planters.”
AECA notes the garden will benefit the community in different ways.
"It’s a wonderful way to promote increased physical activity and mental well-being, while fostering a sense of community and inclusivity across cultures and generations,” said Mitchell.
The park is currently being installed by Dream Developments in the Eastbrook neighbourhood, located at 5500 Kennett Square.
AECA and the city have entered into a five-year lease agreement for the space, with an option to renew for an additional five years.
Regina also approved a three-year tax exemption for the lands, similar to other community gardens.
Along with the community garden, Maka Park will incorporate a play structure space, cycling pump track, toboggan hills and a green space.
Construction on the garden is scheduled for this spring.
