SASKATOON — An 18-year-old who is accused of falsely confessing to the death of Kiefer Kichemonia-Strongquill returned to court on March 2 and his matter was adjourned to March 4 for a bail hearing.
According to court documents, Avyn Ahenakew told police he was responsible for Kichemonia-Strongquill's death. Ahenakew was initially charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault. Those charges were withdrawn after Saskatoon police arrested him at the Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre on Feb. 26 and laid new charges.
He is now charged with accessory after the fact to manslaughter, accessory after the fact to aggravated assault involving a second victim, public mischief, and obstruction of justice.
The charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault have since been withdrawn.
Kichemonia-Strongquill was Saskatoon’s first homicide victim of 2026. Saskatoon police say two 25-year-old men were brought to St. Paul’s Hospital with stab wounds on Feb. 3. One of the men later died from his injuries. The second man remains in stable condition, according to Saskatoon Police Service.
According to his obituary, Kichemonia-Strongquill was pursuing his education at Sask Polytech and had a strong interest in mechanics, He enjoyed playing Roblox online with his daughters and is remembered as a devoted father.
The Saskatoon Police Service Major Crime Unit continues to investigate.
