If you’ve often wondered where unclaimed luggage goes at an airport, chances are it’ll eventually find its way to a store in Scottsboro, Alabama called “Unclaimed Baggage.” This is the only store in North America that is authorized to resell items from luggage that has not been claimed by their owners after a certain period of waiting. Visitors can buy items from their store in Alabama or shop online.
Each year the store releases a list of some of the odd and unusual items it has obtained over the past year. 2025 saw store owners obtain a fully functional robot, a bionic knee, a meteorite fragment believed to be from the 1500’s, and gold-plated golf clubs. In addition to these items, the store acquired a large bee-keeping suit, matching samurai swords, a frog purse, an armadillo purse, an Australian one-ounce bar of pure gold, a suitcase of rat poison, and a fake skeleton.
The top three most valuable finds included white diamond earrings worth over $43,000US, a steel Rolex watch with a 18K yellow gold and diamond dial worth $35,000US, and a Tosca bass clarinet worth over $17,000US.
The most common item that ended up in the store over the past year were t-shirts. In fact, nearly 210 thousand t-shirts of various styles and designs were left in bags from around the world. Over 128,000 pairs of pants were left unclaimed, nearly 58,000 pieces of jewelry went unclaimed, and over 51 thousand cellphones arrived at the store either damaged or locked. Shoes, books, tablets, and phone chargers/cables were other common items.
Around the world, an estimated 9 million people flew daily over the past year and approximately 10 billion people in total traveled by air in 2025.
