As we celebrate 100 years of CKRM, one of Saskatchewan's most storied radio stations, we are pleased to present a series of nine stories featuring icons of CKRM.
Our next 620 CKRM Icon truly lives up to his name — Fred King. We sat down with his son, Jeff King, to revisit Fred’s move to Regina, his leadership in programming at CKRM, and the creation of the legendary Flea Market.
Fred’s career with CKRM began in 1972 and is marked by an impressive list of honours. Fred was named Broadcaster of the Year twice by the Canadian Country Music Association. He served as CCMA President and was posthumously inducted into the CCMA Hall of Fame.
Jeff shares heartfelt memories of the family band, King Country, and the many stars who dropped by over the years. He also reflects on Fred’s life after retirement in 1996 and until his passing in 1999.
We also hear from Ed Bain, one of Fred’s Flea Market co‑hosts, who talks about joining the show and the invaluable lessons he learned from Fred.
A true icon — and a legacy that continues to shape CKRM.
