REGINA – There were duelling interpretations Friday on the latest monthly jobs numbers with the Sask Party pointing to positives and the NDP the negative.
On the positive side, Premier Scott Moe went on the X platform to point to Saskatchewan's unemployment rate being 5.6 per cent, the best in the country.and well lower than the 6.7 per cent unemployment for Canada.
"Saskatchewan’s economy is strong. We had the lowest unemployment rate and strongest full-time job growth in Canada," Moe posted.
Meanwhile the opposition NDP sent out a news release blasting the Moe government over total employment in Saskatchewan down by 5,500 jobs and fulltime employment down by 3,900 jobs month over month.
They also noted the unemployment rate of 5.6 per cent was also an increase, and that unemployment went up to 11.9 per cent across the province.
“The numbers don't lie,” said Aleana Young, Saskatchewan NDP critic for Jobs and Economy, in a news release. “With Scott Moe at the wheel, our province is going in the wrong direction.”
Overall, Canada lost 84,000 jobs nationally according to the February numbers, with the 6.7 per cent national unemployment up 0.1 per cent year over year.
