HUMBOLDT — The League of Educational Administrators, Directors and Superintendents (LEADS) has recognized two longtime education leaders for their service and impact on Saskatchewan’s school system.
Kevin Garinger, director of education and CEO of Horizon School Division, received the Distinguished Service Award, while Darrell Paproski was honoured with a Merit Award.
Garinger has led Horizon School Division since 2014, overseeing 42 schools and about 6,700 students. With more than 30 years of experience in education across Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba, he has served as a teacher, principal, associate superintendent and director.
Under his leadership, the division has focused on safe learning environments, improved literacy and numeracy and successful student transitions. His work has earned provincial recognition, including the Premier’s Award of Innovation and Excellence in Education (2021) and the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Innovation and Excellence in Education (2025).
Garinger has also contributed at the provincial and national levels through leadership roles with LEADS and other organizations, while supporting mental health initiatives in education. He is further recognized for his community leadership in Humboldt, including his role with the Humboldt Broncos organization during the 2018 tragedy.
Paproski was honoured for nearly two decades of service with LEADS, including time on the executive and as president from 2017 to 2018. Known for his collaborative approach, he supported partnerships across the province and advocated for improved outcomes for students, particularly those with intensive needs.
He played a key role in strengthening superintendent networks and contributed to discussions on education governance and system structure. Paproski also supported professional development and mentorship, helping build strong connections among members.
His contributions extended beyond governance, helping foster a strong sense of community within LEADS through events and initiatives that brought education leaders together.
Ben Grebinski, executive director of LEADS, said the awards recognize individuals who have made lasting contributions to education and student success in Saskatchewan.
The Exceptional Student Award recognizes two final-year teacher education students who have demonstrated a significant effort to improve the well-being and experiences of Saskatchewan students through their innovative and personal contributions.
This award was given to Gordon Burns and Ashley Lafontaine.
