Another night in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoffs brought momentum swings, overtime drama, and key special teams performances as teams either clawed back into their series or tightened their grip heading into Game 3.
Terriers Flip the Script with Special Teams Surge
The Yorkton Terriers evened their quarter-final with a 4–1 win over the Melville Millionaires Saturday at the Westland Insurance Arena.
Yorkton’s special teams proved decisive. William Leonard’s second-period power-play goal stood as the winner, snapping a stretch of ten straight unsuccessful opportunities in the series with the man advantage. The Terriers had opened the scoring shorthanded in the first, as Thomas Ries finished off a slick passing play from Jake Briltz.
Melville, which found success on the power play in Game 1, went 0-for-6 in Game 2 as Yorkton’s penalty kill stepped up.
Preston Baerwald broke Callum Creig’s shutout bid late with a shorthanded goal — his second of the series — but Creig was otherwise solid, making 22 saves. Gabriel Courchesne recorded his first two points of the series with a goal and an assist, while Gavin Bartha added insurance.
The series now shifts to Melville for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Friday.
Deslisle Ends Game 2 in double OT as Bombers Take Commanding Lead
The Flin Flon Bombers needed extra time to take a 2–0 series lead over the Estevan Bruins with a 4–3 double-overtime victory.
Maverick Deslisle tipped home the winner just 1:45 into the second overtime, capping a back-and-forth battle. Estevan forced extra time dramatically, with Ethan Andrews tying the game with just 1:06 remaining in regulation.
Both goaltenders were outstanding. Charlie Tritt turned aside 39 shots for the win, while Nathan Kam delivered a remarkable 61-save performance in the loss.
The series shifts to Estevan for Games 3 and 4 at Affinity Place.
Serpa Stands Tall as North Stars Sweep Opening Homestand
The Battlefords North Stars protected home ice and now hold a 2–0 series lead after a 3–2 win over the Melfort Mustangs.
Kaeden Serpa was the difference-maker, stopping 41 of 43 shots, while Owen Nelson scored the eventual game-winner early in the second period. Finlay Klippenstein and Raiden Zacharias also found the back of the net.
Bo Eisner and Darren Hunt replied for Melfort, who now head home looking to regroup.
Game 3 goes Tuesday night at the Northern Lights Palace.
Hawks Answer Back with Dominant Home Performance
The Nipawin Hawks bounced back in emphatic fashion, defeating the Weyburn Red Wings 5–1 to even their series.
Jack Janzen led the charge with two goals and an assist, while Gage Roberts was sharp between the pipes with a 40-save effort.
Konnor Watson, Mason Eggen, and Braeden Jockims also scored for Nipawin. Rylan Peace spoiled the shutout just 11 seconds into the third period.
The series now heads to Weyburn for Games 3 and 4 at the Whitecap Resources Centre.
