SASKATOON — In its latest provincial budget, the government is building on the four‑year funding agreement (MOU2) announced on Nov. 3, 2025.
“The province’s continued investment demonstrates confidence in the institution’s role in strengthening Saskatchewan’s social and economic landscape,” said Vince Bruni‑Bossio, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan (USask), noting that in the coming days they will examine the full budget to assess its implications for students, faculty, research, and operations.
Early highlights for USask include:
- Total funding of $346 million from the Ministry of Advanced Education.
- The government has committed $318.9 million in operating funding, an increase of $18.3 million over the previous year, this includes:
- $2.6 million in funding to expand undergraduate medical education student intake by 20 seats.
- $0.4 million in ongoing funding to expand Saskatchewan-based Nurse Practitioner student intake by 13 students.
- In support of infrastructure and major capital projects, the government is providing $25.8 million, an increase of $3.7 million over the previous year, this includes:
- $0.5 million for continued expansion planning for the Western College of Veterinary Medicine.
Bruni‑Bossio, who began his term as president on January 1, 2026, emphasized that the funding strengthens the university’s ability to respond to emerging challenges.
“The world today challenges us to adapt, to lead in areas that matter globally, and to stay connected to the communities we serve. I know we are prepared to meet these challenges,” he said, adding that about 70 per cent of USask graduates stay in the province.
“USask is not just a university — it is a community, and it is a key part of the Saskatchewan story. We are aligned with the province in pursuing a shared vision to build a stronger, more vibrant Saskatchewan — one where communities and families thrive,” said Bruni-Bossio.
“This exceptional level of support is unmatched across the country and will allow our university to continue delivering strong returns on investment for Saskatchewan and its people. We are grateful for their ongoing commitment to post-secondary education and to the University of Saskatchewan.”
