PRINCE ALBERT — Staff at Saskatchewan Penitentiary intercepted packages containing methamphetamine and other unauthorized items with a value of about $59,000 on March 20, says Correctional Service Canada (CSC).
Police have been notified and both law enforcement and the institution are conducting investigations into the attempted smuggling.
CSC says the seizure resulted from staff vigilance and ongoing efforts to curb the flow of illicit drugs into federal facilities. CSC used tools such as ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.
According to CSC, measures to prevent contraband entry have been heightened across the system to maintain safety for inmates, staff, and visitors. The agency also works with police to pursue individuals involved in trafficking attempts.
CSC has also up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions. These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions.
The toll-free number, 1‑866‑780‑3784, helps ensure that the information shared is protected and that callers remain anonymous.
