SASKATOON — A man who was released from federal custody on statutory release in January is now wanted for being unlawfully at large.
Cody Ian Caron, who completed two-thirds of his three-year, eight-month federal sentence, was released on Jan. 29, under statutory release, a mandatory form of supervised release set by parliament after an inmate has served two-thirds of their sentence, if parole hasn’t already been granted.
Caron had been denied both day parole and full parole in September 2025, with the Parole Board of Canada saying he will “present an undue risk to society if released on day parole and/or full parole.” Instead, he was ordered to serve the remainder of his sentence.
Once he was released on statutory release, the board imposed extensive conditions on his statutory release, citing an extensive criminal history, repeated supervision failures, and a relapse into methamphetamine use shortly after his release.
Caron, a repeat federal offender, was serving his second penitentiary sentence for methamphetamine trafficking and possession of stolen property. Police found a large quantity of methamphetamine that was packaged for sale, as well as stolen identification documents, electronics, and tools, during the investigation that led to his conviction.
His criminal record spans more than two decades and includes property crime, drug trafficking and multiple weapons offences, fleeing from police, and breaches of court-ordered conditions. The board said he had been “unlawfully at large more than once” and had a “persistent pattern of non-compliance” with community supervision.
Although Caron completed the Indigenous Multi-Target High Intensity Program and participated in cultural supports, his behaviour in 2025 raised significant concerns. He was caught bringing contraband into the institution, had contraband found in his room, and tested positive for meth in August 2025, resulting in a return to medium security. These incidents “directly undermine confidence” in his ability to manage freedom, the board wrote.
In August 2022, Caron was banned from North Battleford.
Police have since issued a warrant saying he is unlawfully at large for not following conditions of statutory release.
