REGINA — Two people are dead following a collision involving a truck that fled from police on Highway 39 southeast of Weyburn.
Saskatchewan RCMP say the crash occurred March 27 at about 7:15 p.m., approximately 16 kilometres southeast of Weyburn, within Weyburn RCMP jurisdiction.
Police say an Estevan Police Service officer with Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan was conducting patrols when they observed a truck travelling above the legal speed limit on Highway 39 and activated emergency equipment to initiate a traffic stop.
The truck did not stop and continued at a high rate of speed. Shortly after, police observed the truck collide with a car on the highway.
Officers responded to the scene and provided first aid until EMS and fire crews arrived.
The driver and passenger in the car were declared dead at the scene. They have been identified as a 46-year-old man from Estevan and a 40-year-old woman from Lampman. Their families have been notified.
The driver and sole occupant of the truck was taken to hospital by EMS and later transported by STARS air ambulance to another centre with serious injuries.
As required under The Police Act, 1990, Saskatchewan RCMP notified the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team due to the police interaction prior to the collision.
SIRT has determined the incident falls within its mandate and has directed Saskatchewan RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit to investigate under its oversight.
RCMP said the Serious Crimes Unit continues to investigate the collision with assistance from a collision reconstructionist and the Office of the Chief Coroner. Updates will be provided when available.
