SASKATCHEWAN — While gas prices in Canada could rise to $2 per litre with the continuation of military conflict in the Middle East, the national average remained flat this week, as did Saskatchewan's.
Prices in the province's two largest cities actually fell in the last week, with Regina down 7.4 c/L in the past week, averaging 162.03 c/L Sunday, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Saskatoon dropped to 172.08 c/L, down 0.2 c/L from last week's 172.30 c/L. Both cities remain higher than the Saskatchewan average of 165.71 c/L.
“Gasoline and diesel prices continue to climb to multi-year highs across Canada as the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz curtails the flow of millions of barrels of crude oil each day,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
“The situation remains highly volatile and unpredictable, but upward pressure on fuel prices is likely to persist as long as global oil supplies are constrained by the ongoing disruption in the Strait," says De Haan.
"We’re likely to see the national average for gasoline eventually approach the $2-per-litre mark, while diesel could climb toward $2.50 per litre and potentially set new records if conditions fail to improve. Canadians have already seen a sharp increase in fuel spending, a trend that poses growing risks to the broader economy, while surging diesel prices may begin to reaccelerate inflation.”
The national average has not moved in the last week and is at 173.07 c/L, according to GasBuddy.com. Saskatchewan's average is 165.71 c/L, flat from last week's 165.71 c/L.
According to GasBuddy.com, centres in the province are seeing a variety of prices, mostly lower than those in Saskatoon and Regina. In the Battlefords, pump prices run from 149.9 to 152.9 c/L. Canora ranges from 140.9 to 157.9 c/L. Yorkton's are higher, from 163.5 to 164.9.
In Weyburn, Estevan, Carlyle and Assiniboia, prices range from 159.9 to 168.9 c/L.
According to GasBuddy.com, Saskatchewan has some of the lowest prices in Canada.
