EPS received a report of an attempted fraud involving a contractor hired to provide services for a wedding. According to the EPS, the vendor received pre-payment for the services by way of a cheque that was made out for an excessive amount. He was asked to deposit the cheque and forward the overage to another individual. The financial institution held the cheque and determined that it was not valid. The vendor did not suffer any loss. Police caution the public against requests to receive payments in excess of the amount owed, with expectation to forward the amount to a third party. The EPS says this is a frequent method used to defraud victims.
