SASKATCHEWAN — A snowstorm caused by a spring Alberta clipper weather system affected travel on many Saskatchewan highways on April 8, but conditions are improving.
According to the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure's Highway Hotline, travel is not recommended on a few highways in eastern Saskatchewan. Other routes are classified as covered or partially covered, but most highways are now listed as bare.
Highways in the Saskatoon and Regina areas are listed as bare.
The RCMP has issued an update on the impact of the storm. Beginning April 7, multiple areas of the province experienced winter weather conditions that continued throughout the evening, including freezing rain, wind, and snow.
According to an email from the Saskatchewan RCMP, from 3 p.m. April 7 to noon April 8, members responded to 78 collisions across the province. These include motor vehicle collisions, vehicles in the ditch and other traffic hazards.
The Saskatchewan RCMP says it is not aware of any serious injuries or fatalities related to these incidents.
"While weather conditions are improving today, it’s important that motorists continue to check the forecast before heading out," the RCMP said in a news release. "If poor road conditions exist or are forecasted, please delay travel if possible."
A snowfall warning and a special weather statement that were in effect have been lifted.
