ESTEVAN — The EPS said it received toxicology results April 3 from a blood sample that had been submitted for analysis during a recent impaired driving investigation. The EPS reported the results showed that at the time of driving, the accused had high levels of methamphetamine and cocaine in his system. The accused was subsequently located, arrested and released with a future court date to speak to a charge of impaired driving by drug.
That same day, a traffic stop conducted to check on the sobriety of a driver resulted in a demand for a standardized field sobriety test (SFST). According to the EPS, the driver had difficulty keeping his eyes open while interacting with police. The motorist performed poorly during the SFST and was arrested for impaired driving by drug. Samples of his blood were obtained and charges are pending the result of the analysis.
A traffic stop during the April 4 night shift resulted in the arrest of a man for driving while prohibited. The driver also displayed signs of impairment and subsequently performed poorly on an SFST. Samples of his blood were obtained and impaired driving charges are pending results of the analysis.
In other recent police news, a youth attended the police station with a family member and reported being harassed by other similar-aged children. The matter remains under investigation.
A report of an individual receiving threats came in during the night shift and remains under investigation.
Police responded to a report of an intoxicated man in the downtown area on April 3. He was located, escorted back to his hotel and cautioned to remain there until sober.
An individual known to police was reported to be loitering at a central Estevan business. Members attended and sent the man on his way.
EPS members assisted to locate and confirm the well-being of a man who left St. Joseph's Hospital against medical advice. The EPS said he declined any further involvement by police or medical staff.
The EPS reported two men were observed with a large quantity of open alcohol in a vehicle in a business parking lot in central Estevan during night shift. The alcohol was seized and destroyed and both men were issued tickets for possession of open alcohol in public.
A report of an individual driving while disqualified was received April 4 and the EPS said it remains under investigation.
A domestic disturbance was attended to by EPS members. According to the EPS, family members were loudly arguing. The matter was temporarily mediated following a discussion with those involved.
Following a complaint about a suspicious man walking away from a vehicle left in a roadway, the EPS said two abandoned vehicles were located that appeared to have had the ignition damaged to start without keys. Both vehicles were seized and the EPS said further investigation into their status is being conducted to determine if they are stolen property.
While dealing with the vehicle complaint, the EPS said members learned that a man bound by a curfew was present at a location that was not his approved residence during the specified time. He was directed to exit the residence, to which he complied, and he was arrested for failing to comply with court-ordered conditions. Through later investigation, he was also determined to have operated one of the abandoned vehicles while prohibited from. He was subsequently charged with driving while prohibited as well and remanded to appear in court on April 6 to speak to the charges.
The EPS received a complaint April 6 of a man loitering at a central area business. Members attended and sent him on his way.
Police responded to a domestic disturbance in the Scotsburn area, in which a woman was upset with the way her parents had been treating her. The EPS said the situation was resolved with the female returning to her bedroom and agreeing to remain there for the night.
Police were called to a noise complaint at a trailer court in south Estevan. The complainant reported loud music could be heard. Members attended but could not hear any music. The EPS said a man in the area was spoken to about the report. He advised he had been playing music earlier in the evening, and was cautioned under the noise bylaw.
A woman requested police and Estevan Emergency Medical Services attend to a residence in the Pleasantdale area regarding her son being so intoxicated that he was passing out and had injured himself. Crews attended and located a man the EPS said was heavily intoxicated, had damaged property in the house and was being physically controlled by family members. Estevan EMS treated him for his injuries and the EPS resolved the matter with the family, who agreed to have the individual remain in the residence. No further issues were reported during the night shift.
Police were called to a domestic disturbance in central Estevan, in which the EPS said a 26-year old woman wasn’t being permitted to leave by her 29-year-old boyfriend. The investigation resulted in the man, who was grossly intoxicated, being arrested for breaching a court-ordered condition to not consume alcohol, and mischief for damaging a window in the woman’s vehicle. He was lodged in cells until sober and will appear in Estevan Provincial Court at a later date to speak to the charges.
While at that scene, the EPS said a man in his 20s constantly yelled obscenities and threats from his trailer at EPS members who were on scene. At one point, the EPS said the man exited the trailer and brandished a weapon at police while threatening them before running back inside the trailer and continuing to yell through a window. Criminal charges for uttering threats to police are pending in the matter.
